Desktop Sharing
Desktop and Application Sharing is a Jigsaw Meeting feature that allows the current meeting host or presenter to display her operating system desktop or an application running on it in real time for meeting attendees to view. The following sharing modes are supported:
• Share my Desktop (“desktop” mode). This displays the host or presenter’s full desktop in the top right pane of Jigsaw Meeting for all meeting attendees.
• Share my Application (“application” mode). This displays a selected running application in the top right pane of Jigsaw Meeting for all meeting attendees. If you are an Apple® Mac® user attending a Jigsaw Meeting, you are able to view Desktop and Application Sharing in the top right pane of Jigsaw Meeting when the meeting host or presenter enables sharing.
At this time, the Mac® operating system does not support remote sharing of applications in Jigsaw Meeting—you can share your full desktop only.
Therefore, if you are a meeting host or presenter running Jigsaw Meeting on a Mac®, you can use the Desktop and Application Sharing feature to share your full desktop (i.e., the “Share my Desktop” component). However, you cannot use the “Share an Application” feature to share an individual application. This is due to a third-party software limitation that we anticipate will be corrected in the near future. If you have a slower connection, you may or may not be able to successfully use Desktop and Application Sharing. Like video streaming, sharing a remote computer display can be bandwidth- intensive. On slower connections, there may not be enough bandwidth available to support Desktop and Application Sharing, and may result in one or more of the following symptoms:
The appearance of a blank screen in the top right pane of Jigsaw Meeting on attendee computers.
The appearance of the “Loading...” message in the top right pane of Jigsaw Meeting on attendee computers.
The shared application appearing “zoomed in” in the top right pane of Jigsaw Meeting on attendee computers.
If the top right pane appears to be “stuck” in one of these manners for meeting attendees, and the host or presenter is attempting Desktop and Application Sharing on a slower connection, then latency issues may be preventing proper display of the application or desktop in Jigsaw Meeting. To reduce bandwidth consumption, do not use streaming video (in the top left pane) while sharing.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Internal testing has indicated that upload speeds of less than 256Kbps may result in the symptoms described here. Your situation might be different. It is highly recommended that you test Desktop and Application Sharing over your slow connection prior to holding a live meeting from that connection. Faster connections have not produced similar issues.Yes, on high speed connections, Desktop and Application Sharing works with video streaming running in the top left pane of Jigsaw Meeting.
However, streaming video tends to consume significant bandwidth and may result in a reduction in application response time and visual quality when sharing. If you experience quality or latency issues with Desktop and Application Sharing enabled, it is recommended that video is stopped to preserve bandwidth while sharing. The meeting host or presenter can stop and start desktop sharing by clicking the Desktop and Application Sharing tab in the top right Jigsaw Meeting pane.
• Share my Desktop (“desktop” mode). This option is selected by default. To share the full screen of your operating system desktop, click Start Sharing. To stop, click Stop Sharing.
• Share my Application (“application” mode). To share an application, ensure that the application is running on the desktop, (i.e., the application is not minimized to the operating system’s desktop task bar or tray). Then, perform the following:
1. Click the Share my Application radio button.
NOTE: If video streaming is running in the top left pane, the video may pause momentarily while the drop-down list of desktop applications populates.
2. From the drop-down list, select the application of your choice.
3. Click Start Sharing. To stop, click Stop Sharing. You must be a meeting host or a designated Jigsaw Meeting Presenter in order to do Desktop and Application Sharing.
To share an application that is running, ensure that the application is running on the desktop, (i.e., the application is not minimized to the operating system’s desktop task bar or tray). In the upper right pane, click the Desktop and Application Sharing tab. Then perform the following:
1. Click the Share an Application option.
NOTE: If video streaming is running in the top left pane, the video may pause momentarily while the list of desktop applications loads. When the applications list is finished loading, it displays all applications that are running non-minimized on the desktop.
2. From the drop-down list, select the application of your choice.
3. Click Start Sharing.Switching sharing from one application to another is easy for the meeting presenter. If you are already sharing an application, in the Desktop and Application Sharing tab of the top right pane in Jigsaw Meeting.
1. Click the red Stop Sharing button.
2. Ensure that the application that you wish to share is not closed nor minimized to the task bar. If the application is minimized, click it in the task bar to display it on the desktop and then click the Refresh List button.
3. From the drop-down list, select the application of your choice.
4. Click the green Start Sharing button. If you are using an email client like Microsoft® Outlook® that opens a new message in a new window when you click on that message in your Inbox, the new message is not automatically shared. This is because the application has spawned a new process.
If you wish to share a newly spawned window from any application, you must refresh the drop-down applications list in the Desktop and Application Sharing tab, and then select the new window from the list.
